Favicon how-to

What is Fav Icons? For those who do not know what a Fav Icon or a favicon is, it’s the tiny image situated next to the address of your visiting website. Just have a look in your browsers address bar right now and you’ll see my favicon. If you are still not with me… Gmail has a little red envelope, Facebook has that white on blue “F” block and most other sites that lack a favicon will have a boring white page icon with the corner bent over. To produce one is fairly simple, here’s how.

  1. Take an image and crop/resize it to 16px wide by 16px high image.
  2. Save the image as a PNG file and name it “favicon.png”. (PNG’s supports transparency for your favicons)
  3. Rename the file “favicon.png” to “favicon.ico”
  4. Advanced part: Log onto your server where your site is hosted and upload the favicon.ico to the root folder.
  5. Thats it! Sometimes it might not display immediately due to internet cache but it will soon enough.

If you do happen to have trouble making your own favicon you can use this “easy to use” favicon creater website. FavIkon.com. Real Nice!
